The Great British Porn Study

Searches for ‘coronavirus porn’ are up 700%, which goes to show that not only are more Brits taking to their computers for some intimacy during lockdown, but they are also seeking new types of adult content.

According to Google Trends, searches for ‘Pornhub’ peaked on March 15th amid governmental pleas to stay indoors, and searches for ‘Pornhub premium’ are also up by 60%, revealing that Brits are willing to invest in their self-pleasure.

Bearing all this in mind, EliteSocietyLondon decided to see just exactly HOW Brits are getting off during these hard times. To do this, we have taken popular porn categories and looked at how often they are googled by Brits, to determine popularity of them in cities across the UK.

Methodology:

We took a look at the different types of categories on popular adult streaming site, Pornhub. In total there were 73 different porn categories, ranging from “red head” to “MILF”. Using Google Ad’s Keyword Planner tool, we looked at the search volumes per month for each category, in 56 cities across the UK.

This then gave us the rankings for each porn category per city. Mapping all the search volume data on Excel, we could also discover which city was more likely to watch a certain category than others, by comparing it’s ranking to the UK average.

General UK data

The most popular category by far, in 96% of cities examined, was gay porn. This was followed in second place by ‘MILF’, ‘hentai’ in third place, ‘big tits’ in fourth and finally, ‘lesbian porn’ in fifth place. In general, the top 5 most searched for porn categories across cities consisted of these. 

There were some anomalies, however. Newport’s number one category was none of the above, instead they preferred to look at the category ‘squirting’. Leeds were more likely than any other city to be watching lesbian porn – it was the second most searched for category, compared to its UK average position in fifth place. Plymouth and Sheffield were both fans of the ‘big tits’ category, which was the second most searched for of the 73 different categories (two places higher than the UK average, fourth place). A general look at the top 10 porn categories in the UK is as follows:

  8. Mature Porn
  9. Blowjob
  10. BBW

An honourable mention goes to the category “British Porn”, which only just missed out on the tenth spot – proving we like our porn like we like our beef – home grown!

We were also able to compare recent Google searches for adult categories to how many searches they got this time last year – to see which types of porn people are turning to during lockdown. The categories that saw the largest increase in searches include:

  • Big dick: 123% increase in searches compared with March last year
  • Small tits: +83%
  • Blowjob: +50%
  • Orgy: +50%
  • POV: +50%
  • Strap on: +50%
  • MILF: +50%
  • Fingering: +49%
  • Bondage: +49%
  • Romantic porn: +23%

Perhaps the 23% increase in searches for ‘romantic porn’ could indicate an increase in couples watching adult content together to spice things up a little?

Which UK cities are searching for porn the most? 

When combining the total searches per month for each category, we got an idea of how many searches in each city were dedicated to looking for porn. But of course, places like London and Manchester had the highest number of searches, due to their high population. What we needed was to standardise the figures. In order to find out which city was Googling to get off the most, we found out the percentage of the population that were googling these terms each month and ordered the percentages from highest to lowest. This gave us the following as the top 10 cities googling porn categories each month:

  1. Truro
  2. Bangor
  3. Inverness
  4. Edinburgh
  5. Portsmouth
  6. Norwich
  7. Salisbury
  8. Birmingham
  9. Peterborough
  10. Bristol 

It would appear that people in the South West are a little more randy during their “alone time” as 3 in 10 of the cities with the highest percentage of their population googling porn are from this region (Truro, Salisbury, and Bristol.) The Scots are also quite inquisitive about their adult content, with both Inverness and Edinburgh appearing in the top 5. 

The 10 cities with the fewest Google searches relating to porn per population are as follows:

  1. Winchester
  2. Lichfield
  3. Brighton and Hove
  4. Chichester
  5. Wakefield
  6. Newport
  7. Cardiff
  8. Durham
  9. Southampton
  10. Swansea

Although Bangor might be in second place for the most porn searches per capita, it would seem that the rest of Wales struggle to keep up the pace – with Newport, Cardiff and Swansea all in the bottom 10. 

Regional Breakdown

East Midlands

Four cities were analysed in the East Midlands: Derby, Nottingham Leicester, and Lincoln. These 4 cities amassed a total of 93,580 porn searches a month – that’s 5% of the UK total.

Of all 73 adult categories,  cities in the East Midland were more likely than any other city in the UK to search for the following: ‘Muscle man’ (Derby ranked it 33rd place of 73, the highest ranking of all 56 cities), ‘Indian Porn’ (this was the 6th most watched category in Leicester, higher than all other UK cities except Wolverhampton, where it is also ranked 6th) and ‘red head porn’ (its highest ranking was in Lincoln, in 34th place, whereas the rest of the UK placed it 51st). 

East of England

The cities in the East of England analysed in this study were: Norwich, Peterborough, Cambridge and St Albans. The combined monthly search volume of adult content for these cities was 51,200 – 3% of the UK total.

Of all 73 adult categories, cities in the East of England were more likely than any other to search for Japanese and Korean porn – these were ranked as 11th and 25th most watched porn categories in Cambridge respectively.  Japanese especially did not get as high on any other city’s most-watched list; on average it was the 23rd most watched category, and Korean the 45th most watched. 

London

London totals 821,730 searches a month for different X-rated categories. That works out to be 9% of the population each month! Their searches represent around 42% of the UK total. 

London’s taste in titillation is perhaps a little more banal than other regions, meaning Londoners aren’t particularly more likely to search for certain categories.

North East

The 3 North East cities analysed were Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham – Googlers in these cities totalled 53,400 searches a month for pornographic content – about 3% of the UK total. 

Of all 73 adult categories, the North East cities were more likely than any other to look for ‘celebrity porn’ (the 13th most googled porn category in Sunderland), ‘Czech porn’ (ranking as the 14th most watched in Sunderland – compared to the average UK ranking in 38th place), ‘interracial porn’ (31st most watched in Sunderland, compared to an average UK ranking in 52nd place).  Durham residents on the other hand, were more likely than any other city to watch ‘creampie’ porn – it was the 13th most watched in this city (compared to the UK average of 19th most watched). Voyeurs in Durham were also intrigued by ‘webcam porn’ – it was the city most likely to google this adult category and is ranked in 26th place (UK average is 60th place). 

North West

The 7 North West cities analysed were Liverpool, Chester, Preston, Carlisle, Salford, Lancaster, and Manchester – Googlers in these cities totalled 179,970 searches a month for pornographic content – about 9% of the UK total. 

Of all 73 adult categories, the North West cities were more likely than any other to fantasise about ‘strap ons’ – it was the 34th most watched porn category in Liverpool AND Chester, ranking 12 places above the UK average (46th place). The most patriotic of the regions, Chester and Salford were more likely than any other city to view ‘British porn’ – it was ranked 9th most watched, 3 places higher than the UK average. 

Preston residents are quite keen on ‘feet porn’, as demonstrated by the fact that it was the city most likely to watch this category, alongside Aberdeen. In both cities ‘feet porn’ ranks in 30th place, compared to the UK average of 44th place. 

Lancaster citizens were most likely to google ‘female orgasm’, with it being the 33rd most watched category in this city (compared with an average UK ranking of 46th place).

Carlisle, alongside Bath, York and Edinburgh, was most likely to watch ‘cuckold porn’- which, for those who don’t know, consists of a man’s wife engaging in sexual acts with other men, in front of him. It was the 14th most watched category in these cities, the UK’s average ranking for it is in 19th place.

South East

The 7 South East cities analysed were Portsmouth, Oxford, Canterbury, Winchester, Brighton, Chichester and Southampton – Googlers in these cities totalled 80,080 searches a month for pornographic content – about 4% of the UK total. 

Of all 73 adult categories, the South East cities were more likely than any other to look for ‘Russian porn’. It was the 28th most watched porn category in Portsmouth, whereas for the rest of the UK it averaged out at the 57th most watched.

Canterbury, home to the cathedral, Chaucer, and lovers of ‘ebony porn’. Indeed, this adult video category entered their most watched porn list at number 10, whereas it most commonly featured in 24th place for the rest of the UK. Elsewhere in the South East, Winchester dwellers were keen on their ‘POV’ porn (or ‘Point of View’), ranking it 30th (UK average was 45th). The kinkiest Brits seems to live in Brighton, where ‘fetish porn’ is most viewed (in 24th place for Brighton residents, UK average was 31st place). And Chichester residents loved their ‘casting porn’, it ranked 26th of their list – 19 places higher than the UK average!  

South West

The 7 South West cities analysed were Truro, Salisbury, Bristol, Bath, Plymouth and Exeter– Googlers in these cities totalled 118,180 searches a month for pornographic content – about 6% of the UK total. 

Of all 73 adult categories, the South West cities were more likely than any other to look for ‘cartoon porn’ (placed 10th on Truro’s list), ‘old/young porn’ (19th on Truro’s list but 54th on the rest of the UK’s, quite a large disparity!). ‘Romantic porn’ was also more common in Truro than elsewhere in Britain, featuring 27th on their list (UK average placed this category 44th). 

‘Threesomes’ on the other hand, proved to be most popular in Salisbury, where it ranked 14th most watched (compared to the UK average of 21st place). Residents of Bath are also quite adventurous porn watchers, as they were more likely than any other city to watch categories like ‘handjob’, where they ranked it 12th, (UK average placed it 18th) and ‘fingering’ (21st most watched, average in the UK was 27th). They also proved to be exhibitionists, being more likely than anywhere else to google ‘public porn’. This was Bath’s 35th most-watched porn category, on average in the UK it was the 49th most watched.

Exeter residents ranked ‘transgender porn’ in 55th place out of 73, when the UK average was 67th place. Those in Plymouth were feeling a little more fancy, being more likely than anywhere else to google ‘French porn’ (30th place, elsewhere: 48th) and also ‘party porn’ (26th most watched, 34th elsewhere in the UK). 

West Midlands

The 7 West Midland cities analysed were Birmingham, Coventry, Worcester, Wolverhampton, Stoke-on-Trent, Hereford, and Lichfield. These cities totalled 201,410 searches a month for adult content – about 10% of the UK total. 

Of all 73 adult categories, the West Midland cities were more likely than any other to look for ‘latina porn’, where it was most googled by Brummies and ranked 29th on their list of most-viewed categories, quite a few places higher than the UK average of 53rd place!

Elsewhere in the West Midlands, Lichfield residents have slightly more niche porn tastes, as they were more likely than anywhere else to watch ‘smoking porn’. In fact it was the 14th most watched in this area, and appeared far lower down on the UK’s average rankings, in 57th place. Hereford citizens were fans of ‘double penetration’ videos, where it ranked 26th compared to 38th elsewhere in the UK. 

Yorkshire and the Humber

The 6 Yorkshire and the Humber cities analysed were Leeds, Kingston upon Hull, Sheffield, York and Bradford. These cities totalled 163,070 searches a month for adult content – about 8% of the UK total. 

Of all 73 adult categories, the Yorkshire and the Humber cities were more likely than any other to look for ‘school porn’, controversially placed 48th in Kingston Upon Hull’s most-watched list (UK average placement was in 60th place). Bradford residents were more interested in ‘Arab porn’, ranking it in 16th place (35th elsewhere in the UK), and ‘big dick’ porn, which just missed out on a top 10 spot in Bradford, being placed at number 11 (UK average placement: 16th). 

Scotland

The 6 Scottish cities analysed were Inverness, Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen, Stirling, and Glasgow. These cities totalled 156,010 searches a month for adult content – about 8% of the UK total. 

Of all 73 adult categories, Scottish cities were more likely than any other to watch ‘asian porn’ – it was the 12th most-viewed type of porn in Inverness (21st most viewed elsewhere in the UK). Inverness also liked their ‘rough sex’ videos (it was the 20th most viewed category in this city, the UK average placed it in 34th place). Inverness wasn’t the only Scottish city into harder themes – Dundee was the city in the UK most likely to watch the category ‘hardcore’, where it was placed 15th, compared to the UK average ranking at 47th!

Elsewhere in Scotland, Edinburgh residents placed ‘cuckold porn’ in 14th place, whereas the rest of the UK placed it 19th, and Aberdeen fantasised about ‘feet porn’ and ‘mature porn’, where they were ranked 30th and 5th respectively! Internet users in Stirling were most intrigued by ‘German porn’, it was their 16th most-watched category, but only the 48th elsewhere in the UK. They were also the city most likely to partake in some nostalgic ‘vintage porn’ – 11th most watched in Stirling, 21st most popular category elsewhere in the UK. 

Wales

The 4 Welsh cities analysed were Bangor, Newport, Cardiff and Swansea. These cities totalled 19,960 searches a month for adult content – about 1% of the UK total. 

Of all 73 porn categories, Welsh cities were more likely than any other to watch ‘bondage’ porn, this was the 11th most viewed category in Bangor (20th in the rest of the UK). Bangor were also very busy watching ‘Brazilian porn’ (29th most watched in this area, whereas the UK average was 52nd) and ‘Brunette porn’ (ranked 30th in Bangor, 56th everywhere else). Newport residents were more a likely to search for ‘babysitter porn’ than any other UK city (it ranked 27th on their list, 42nd for the rest of the UK). They also enjoyed ‘cosplay porn’, ‘college porn’ and ‘European porn’ more than any other place in the UK, ranking 21st, 33rd and 38th respectively.
